Exercise 1. Write a memo to an employee whose work and behavior have been unsatisfactory. (You are the department manager.) Try to motivate the employee to improve his performance. Be brief, direct, honest—and as compassionate and understanding of the feelings of others as possible.

Exercise 2: Write a letter to a potential customer for a firm’s products or services. Attempt to convince the client to make a purchase. Be as persuasive as possible. Give the client several good reasons for making the purchase. Tell the client how the transaction will benefit sales, reduce costs, or eliminate problems.
